Do you remember the Canon Powershot SD960 IS digicam? Well here's an upgrade to the cute pill-shaped digicam. Its called the Canon Powershot SD970 IS. Again, if you haven't heard of it before, you would've probably seen it being sold under the name Canon Digital Ixus 990 IS. Yet again, I don't see the logic. Having two names for the same product is annoying and confusing. Anyway, the SD970 IS still bears the pill shape but there's a slight difference. The edges are still sounded on one end. On the other end, the edges are slightly sharper. This is probably to increase grip. It's predecessor was hard to hold on to. Nevertheless, the digicam is still cute. The model I tried out was mustard yellow in color. It measures 96 x 57 x 26mm and weighs 160g. If you compare the two digicams side by side, you will notice that the SD970 IS is slightly larger and heavier than the SD960 IS. The body is quite scratch resistant.
The screen has received a major upgrade. It is a 3″ LCD display. Worried that large screens will distort your images and videos? No worries. The screen is nicely proportioned. Images and videos are not stretched to such an extent that it looks weird. The screen also has a very high resolution: 461,000 dots. This means that media display is still clear even though the screen has become larger. You might want to take care when using the screen though because it gets scratched easily. It can be viewed in all lighting conditions.
To store data, you can use either SD, SDHC or MMC cards. Large cards pose a very small problem to the digicam but nevertheless it must be mentioned. Large cards, especially large cards that are almost full, tend to slow down file browsing speed. Many of you might not even notice it because the slowing down is very little. However it must be mentioned. Startup speed is fast and unaffected. The digicam is easy to use. Even a small kid could use it (provided you are willing to share this cute digicam with anyone else that is!). The controls are responsive and clearly indicated.
The maximum picture resolution of the SD970 IS is 12.1 megapixels. I noticed that even though the picture resolution is the same, the pictures of the SD970 IS look better than that of it's predecessor, if that's even possible. But yes, they do! Pictures look clearer and sharper. They are also more colorful and natural. Image noise occurrence is reduced greatly. The pictures have lesser red eyes in them. The built-in image stabilization and face detection features ensure clear and focused pictures. The pictures are suitable as small posters and are of print quality. The maximum zoom value is 5x. You will find that even at maximum zoom, pictures are crystal clear. The videos are of high definition resolution: 1280 x 720. The videos can be played on most large screens and there won't be even the slightest hint of pixelization present. The videos are clear and video motion is smooth.
This digicam is definitely better than it's predecessor, though slightly less cute. The Canon Powershot SD970 IS is definitely a great digicam to have.
